RSPB BIG GARDEN BIRDWATCH 2025

This Saturday we spent an hour participating in the RSPB #BigGardenBirdWatch at Global Gardens.
The RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch is the UK's biggest citizen science wildlife survey. By taking part, we can help build understanding of how garden birds are doing right now in the UK.
In our #BigGardenBirdWatch2025 at Global Gardens, we saw:
-8 house sparrows
-10 starlings
-1 magpie
-1 robin
-3 blackbirds (2 male and 1 female)
-3 crows
-1 wood pigeon
-1 dunnock
-1 wren
-2 long tailed tits
-1 song thrush
-1 Coal Tit
We hae submitted our findings to the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch. According to the RSPB, Starlings, House sparrows and Carrion crows are the most popular sitings so far in the 2025 bird count, so our bird atch falls in line with what a lot of people in the UK are seeing right now.
This is the fifth year we have participated as a project and it is interesting to notice the changes in bird life. Generally we have seen fewer tits and blackbirds on our site - potentially due to the loss of brambles which provide habitat for ground nesting birds across the Flaxland allotments. Into 2025, our plan is to plant more trees and shrubs to support the birdlife on site.
It is quite a relaxing thing to do for one hour so make a brew, find a comfy spot and get your pair of binoculors out if you have and get involved! Find out more here.
